Family Counseling
Families come in all shapes and sizes (blended families, foster and adopted children and extended relatives and in-laws). Regardless of what your family looks like, families shape who we are as well as whom we become. It is within the family that we learn vocabulary, habits, values, and traditions. Families teach us how to navigate life including how to behave in various situations, how to love, and how to interact with others. Families that behave in dysfunctional ways often struggle with connecting with one another, which can cause distress and feelings of isolation. Unfortunately, many times these dysfunctional patterns will spill over into other relationships in our lives…friendships, intimate relationships, and professional relationships.
Family therapy is a form of treatment which is designed to explore and address the issues affecting the health and functioning of a family. Family therapy can help individuals and families through a difficult period of time, major life transitions, or mental or behavioral health issues.
I take an individualized approach to family therapy as I meet each family where they are at. It is not my job to change how families do things…my job is to help the family to gain a better understanding of the behaviors and patterns that exist within their family, uncover strengths and resources, and most of all provide hope and encouragement. Some of the goals that can be achieved in family therapy include:
- Healthier boundaries, patterns and dynamics
- Improved communication skills
- Improved problem solving
- Increased empathy
- Reduced conflict
